Mayan Empire

History and Foundation

The Mayan Empire flourished in the region of Mesoamerica, which includes present-day Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras, from 2000 BC to 1500 AD. The Mayan civilization developed in several phases, from the Preclassic phase (2000 BC - 250 AD) to the Classic phase (250 - 900 AD) and the Postclassic phase (900 - 1500 AD). The city of Tikal, in Guatemala, was one of the main Mayan cities.

Society and Social Classes

Mayan society was divided into social classes, with the elite at the top and the peasants and slaves at the bottom. The elite consisted of kings, nobles and priests, who held political and religious power. The peasants cultivated the land and produced food, while slaves were used for the hardest work. Mayan women had an important role in society and could become priestesses, healers or artisans.
